On the latest episode of the Awkward Human Survival Guide, we received a question about a woman who looks like a “thumbs up.” They didn’t include a picture, so we did some research to find out if these thumb people truly exist. In short, they do.
Explicit Thumbification
Our initial search turned up people seemingly interested in “thumbifying” themselves. Basically, they made weird poses and utilized camera lens distortion factors that made them look like a stumpy digit.

Of course, this involved a concerted effort. We can’t say for certain that these people are mistaken for walking thumbs in human clothing day after day, photo after photo.
Thumbposters
To make matters worse, there aren’t just humans that try to look like thumbs but thumbs trying to look like humans. Thumbpersonators, or thumbposters, if you will. And when you’re just a thumb with some clever makeup, you can be anyone from Hitler to Jesus.

Thumbropomorphism
Of course, we weren’t going to let this go until we actually found some people who seemed to embody the heart and soul of a thumb. These people go about their days as the true thumbs of humanity. They don’t pose. They don’t create imposters. They just are.

While it’s clearly possible for a person to resemble a thumb, we found the most evidence with men—particularly the bald ones, as thumbs don’t have hair. So does this woman really like a thumb? We may never know, but at least there’s a strong foundation for the belief that someday we will.
