PieMessage Puts iMessage on Your Android

Android/OS X: Text messages just work better when you can send them from anywhere. iMessage gave consumers loyal to the Apple ecosystem that exact convenience, but it’s lost the minute you step outside of Apple’s supposed technological utopia. Developer Eric Chee decided to change that with PieMessage.

As you’ll see in the video above, you download the PieMessage app onto your Android phone and it can communicate over Apple’s iMessage protocol with pretty much any iPhone (that has iMessage, of course). But despite how seamless it looks, unfortunately PieMessage requires a little help from a Mac to work, including a public IP address (not hard to set up), and you’ll also need to sideload the app onto your Android.

If you’re like me and want to use an Android phone but struggle to switch because you feel locked into iMessage, this is hardly a dealbreaker. I text through my computers far more than my iPhone, so PieMessage might finally get me over to Android as a regular user after years of wishing for this exact feature.

Only time and experience will tell! PieMessage works but it’s still an alpha application (hence the sideloading). You can grab it on GitHub along with full installation instructions so you can iMessage to your heart’s content—on either platform.
